Ten days of repentance

The ten days of repentance, known as the “Aseres Yimai Teshuva” are ten special days for repentance that starts with Rosh Hashana and ends with Yom Kippur.  What is so unique about these days – teshuva can be done throughout the year? Why is Rosh Hashana counted as two of these days since we make no mention of sin then? Why does Rosh Hashana come before Yom Kippur?

The speciality of these days is teshuva for the individual that has the same power as the tzibbur. The power of many is that the Shechina is found amongst them and during these ten days the Shechina is found close to the individuals enabling them to achieve teshuva like the many.

The Vilna Goan explains that on Rosh Hashana the verdict of the individual is written but the signing waits until Yom Kippur. During these ten days if the person does sincere teshuva he is able to cause the written decree to be torn up and rewritten!
